International Day of the Midwife - Women and Newborns

Midwives support women as they prepare for birth, during birth and with their newborn.

This year, the International Day of the Midwife is highlighting 'Women and Newborns'.

This is an important theme, as many women feel they are 'encouraged' to leave the hospital before they are ready.  The home visits also seem to be too few or too far.  The support of a dedicated (continuity care) midwife can make an incredibly positive difference as a woman transitions into motherhood.  The first 6 weeks (or MORE) are a time of transition.  Too many women are cast off into motherhood without this continuity of support.  when we are ejected from the hospital, we say goodbye to our midwife (if we were fortunate enough to have a continuity care midwife) and hello to the Maternal and Child Healthcare Nurse (no choice here, this is allocated based on location).

The 'changing of the guard' means that we have to retell our story and re-establish a relationship.

And all this within the confines of our appointment time.  Too bad if getting to the appointment is difficult, too bad if you need more time, or a different time.  Too bad if you need to mother differently to the 'acceptable' methods.

So today, an especially loud cheer to the continuity care midwives who prepare women form and support women through the newborn phase.
